You can’t be a dictator if you don’t have a comical sidekick, apparently (29 September 2011)

I was struck last week by the absurdity of Gaddafi and his henchmen sending out recorded messages saying that they were still in charge of Libya – while the real people in charge were sitting in the United Nations building in New York.

The Gaddafi’s and others like Moussa Ibrahim are living in a seemingly alternate reality but do they really believe that they’re still in charge of a country that has, for the most part, torn down most of the pictures and flags that symbolised the Gaddafi regime?  A country that has welcomed this freeing from the regime with open arms and whose own people fought for it, yes with NATO help but the people rose and said “enough”.  So much so that Libyan’s living in other countries headed back to lend a hand in the fight for their home country.

A few weeks ago Gaddafi spokesman Moussa Ibrahim was on TV saying that there was no uprising, no rebels, Tripoli was not under threat and there were no rebels in Benghazi (there was) and the city was still under the control of Gaddafi.  This led to him being compared to Muhammad Saeed al-Sahhaf, the Iraqi Minister for Information while Saddam was still in control, who was given the nickname “Comical Ali” following a series of quotes such as:   They are sick in their minds.  They say they brought 65 tanks into center of city.  I say to you this talk is not true.   This is part of their sick mind.

That, of course, was when there clearly were American tanks rumbling through Baghdad.  You can read more from Comical Ali here.

As if it wasn’t enough that Moussa Ibrahim found himself being compared to Comical Ali tonight we learn that there are unconfirmed reports that he has been captured by the NTC.  Apparently he was captured near the city of Sirte and it looked like he was trying to leave and, despite having told Reuters on Monday that he could leave Sirte even through there were NTC fighters around the city he obviously wasn’t as certain as he made out that he would not be recognised when leaving because we also learned tonight that some other reports say when captured he was dressed as a woman.

Please note – at the time of publishing the reports of Moussa Ibrahim being captured and being dressed as a woman were unconfirmed.
